Treatment for chronic pain
Frank Schwoeri, Ph.D., and Jane Fox, LCSW, both provide psychological
treatment for patients with chronic pain, usually on referral
from a patient's physicians.
Chronic pain is a real phenomenon, not 'all
in your head.' If your physician refers you to us for treatment
for chronic pain, it's because he/she recognizes that chronic
pain can often be helped through psychological, non-medication
based methods, either as an adjunct to, or instead of pain medication.
There are two ways in which we help people with chronic pain:
1.) by teaching you methods of pain management which use psychological
principles such as imagery and self-hypnosis to change the quality
of the pain experience and give you a sense of control and 2.)
by addressing the psychological, emotional and stress-related
factors which can worsen and maintain pain. Such methods include
stress reduction training and psychotherapy. Anxiety, stress,
and depression are especially important to address because they
always make pain worse.
Usually we will use a combination of stress reduction techniques
and psychotherapy to help improve your quality of life.
