The Temenos Center welcomes Antoinette C. Tate, Ph.D. as a Postdoctoral Fellow. She earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from American University in 2010. She completed her predoctoral internship at the Center for Family Development, a community-based mental health center in Lowell, MA.
Dr. Tate has worked in a variety of clinical settings and enjoys working with children, teens, adults, and couples. Prior to graduate school, she was a group therapist and case manager at the Renfrew Center, introducing body image-focused groups to the residential program. While working toward her degree, she was a Crisis Counselor with Greenbelt CARES in Maryland, where she worked with crime victims, provided community outreach, and helped families and couples in the weekly clinic. She completed an externship with the University of Maryland Parent Consultation and Child Evaluation Services, and then spent almost 5 years working with at-risk youth in Philadelphia. In these positions, she worked individually and in groups with children ages 4 through 18, consulted with parents, and coordinated care with teachers and other support staff.
Dr. Tate believes that a positive therapeutic experience begins with a strong, empathic relationship. Because of her eclectic background, she works collaboratively with her clients to identify their needs, strengths and goals. She draws from different theoretical orientations, primarily cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic, to meet the needs of her clients. She specializes in eating disorders and body image concerns, trauma, relationship discord, depression, anger management, behavioral concerns, addiction, and anxiety. Dr. Tate holds a Temporary Permit for the practice of clinical psychology under the supervision of Dr. Frank Schwoeri, as she works toward completing the supervised experience requirement for full licensure as a psychologist in New Jersey.
